UKEG produces 20/10 profiles and Asolato, heat cut ventilated, and in corten steel to give each installation impacting materiality, with a colour that changes with time and exceptional mechanical strength. Corten steel has a low content of alloys (originally 0.1-0.2% phosphorous, 0.2-0.5% copper and 0.5-1.5% chrome) and very high mechanical strength, and was patented in 1933 by the United States Steel Corporation. The name expresses the features that distinguish it from carbon steel: “CORrosion resistance” and “TENsile strength”. It stands out for its high yield strength of 580 Mpa, higher than normal steel, meaning greatly reduced thickness and weight when used. The high resistance to electrochemical corrosion is given by the oxides inside, that enable it to protect itself and create a passivating surface patina that prevents corrosion and, therefore, the decline of the material. There are three categories of corten steel which vary for features and range of use: A phosphorous corten for use in architectural applications, and B and C vanadium corten used for structures subject to very heavy stress factors.
